Rise & Fall (Capricho 56 „Subir y bajar”):
Goya’s commentary: “Fortune treats very badly those who court her. She rewards with smoke the trouble of climbing and punishes with downfall those who have succeeded in rising.”
Personified by a goat-footed, Satyr-like figure, Fortune is shown in an unstable half-sitting, half-reclining position on a huge globe. After having kicked down two victims of ambition, who are falling through the air, Fortune is now acrobatically lifting a third man – splendidly attired, decorated and wearing a sword – to a temporary triumph. This latter victim appears to be completely unaware of his impending downfall which is already suggested in the thread of Fortune’s raised leg.
